FAQ

While walking one day in the 1980s, Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., happened to discover a connection between eye movement and persistent upsetting memories. This chance
discovery led her in a lifelong study and the evolution of what we know today as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

EMDR is an evidenced based therapy that allows us a way to reconnect our body and brain, ultimately providing ourselves an avenue to reprocess disturbing thoughts and memories and decrease overall distress.

EMDR therapy can help children and adults of all ages. Currently, NovaEMDR works primarily with adults over the age of 18.

Absolutely. Many people find doing EMDR virtually preferable as they are already in a safe space and can rest before and after a session.

Consult calls are used to briefly discuss your EMDR needs and goals. It is also Jaime’s way of answering any questions you might have before deciding to schedule your initial intake session.

All initial intake sessions are scheduled for two hours. Typically, an intake lasts about 60-90 minutes. Plenty of time is included to help incorporate breaks, educate about various EMDR or therapeutic models, and set up scheduling.

Everyone comes to therapy with different experiences; therefore, the typical number of sessions varies with each client. Some memories can be processed in as few as 12 sessions where others may take longer. I am known for slowing down the overall process, focusing on establishing a strong rapport, and ensuring you have a strong set of resourcing tools before starting formal EMDR. I also like to remain flexible during sessions, so that if you have a day where you just want to “talk” we certainly can.

Honestly, everyone can be a good candidate. It is my professional responsibility to conduct a thorough assessment, and continue assessing any underlying challenges as a means of due diligence. There are some factors that may lead to an external referral, but those will be discussed with you in session if any concerns arise.

Our online therapy platform and email are HIPAA-compliant, ensuring all communications and sessions are confidential. However, there are some exceptions, such as when a client poses a risk to themselves or others, or if there is suspected abuse or neglect. We will discuss confidentiality and its limits more in our first intake session.

I offer virtual sessions. If you have a computer/laptop or tablet, we will be able to do EMDR together.

NovaEMDR is out of network (OON) with insurance. We can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance panel for out of network benefits. Please take a minute to review information regarding the Good Faith Estimate (GFE) at the bottom of our website. This form will also be provided to you to sign when you start the enrollment process with us.

We accept all forms of credit cards, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for therapeutic services.

Depending on your needs, goals, and availability, sessions are typically recommended on a weekly or bi-weekly (twice weekly) basis.

In this technological age, regular talk therapy or consultation can be conducted with ease from a parked car in Virginia. However, EMDR processing is not recommended to be conducted in a parked vehicle due to environmental, safety, and privacy concerns.

Both are great options for EMDR. Virtual EMDR does require basic computer skills, but with mindful preparation beforehand, this can help even the busiest of professionals or parents.

We recommend finding a private, quiet space where you will not be interrupted. A reliable internet connection, camera, and microphone are all major components of a successful session. If you have any concerns or technical difficulties, your therapist can help you troubleshoot.

At this time, we do not offer EMDR Intensives but can provide a trusted referral resource.

EMDR is an advanced mental health intervention. It should only be offered by properly trained and licensed mental health clinicians. As a formally trained and certified EMDR clinician I have completed over 300 processing sessions thus far. As a consultant-in- training (CIT), I am actively coaching and mentoring other formally trained clinicians toward earning their EMDR certifications or help to sharpen their skills. I pride myself on staying up to date with all the latest EMDR research and training developments through my own active consultation and membership with the EMDRIA accrediting body. If you are curious to learn more about the international community of formally trained EMDR clinicians, I highly recommend visiting the link below.

“Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or can resist, all move in a positive direction.”
